Ise City, Mie Prefecture / おかげ横丁(三重県伊勢市)
Hello everyone, this is Ronny ^^ Recent summers in Japan have been so hot that no matter where you go, you end up parched…
Today’s topic…
Do you know any places in Japan where you can enjoy traditional street food?
<For more information about Kamakura, Tabearuki(食べ歩き)a foodie destination we introduced previously, please refer to this article⇩.>

If you’re planning a visit to Japan and looking for a place where history, culture, and delicious food come together, Okage Yokocho (おかげ横丁) in Ise is the perfect destination. Located just beside the famous Ise Grand Shrine, this charming street recreates the atmosphere of the Edo period and offers a truly authentic Japanese experience.
Last month, I drove around Ise with my friends. Although it was the plum rain season, visiting Ise Shrine in the rain was also enjoyable. I will introduce Ise Shrine on another occasion.

What is Okage Yokocho?
Okage Yokocho is a reconstructed traditional townscape that brings to life the look and feel of old Japan. Built in 1993, this area is designed to resemble what Ise would have looked like during the Edo to Meiji periods (17th–19th centuries). The word “okage” means “gratitude,” and this place was created to express thanks to the many pilgrims who have visited Ise over the centuries.
With its wooden buildings, lantern-lit streets, and traditional signage, walking through Okage Yokocho feels like stepping into a movie set — but it’s all real.

Local Foods YOU MUST TRY!!
One of the biggest draws of Okage Yokocho is its incredible street food. Here are some must-tries:
- Ise Udon – Thick, chewy noodles served in a rich, dark soy sauce broth.
- Akafuku Mochi – Soft rice cakes topped with smooth red bean paste. A local specialty since 1707!
- Grilled Skewers & Snacks – Freshly grilled seafood, wagyu beef skewers, and more.
- Craft Beer & Sake – Enjoy local brews at traditional taverns.
You can walk, eat, and explore — just like locals did hundreds of years ago.

How to get Okage?
- Open Hours: Typically 9:30 AM – 5:00 PM (may vary by season)
- Access: From Nagoya, take the Kintetsu Line to Iseshi Station (~1.5 hours), then a bus or taxi to the shrine.
- From JR Ise-city station takes about 30 mins
You MUST travel!!
I hope you feel wanna travelling there. Please bring cash, as some small shops may not accept credit cards. And also visit early in the day to avoid crowds, especially on weekends and holidays. For those seeking a taste of authentic Japan beyond Tokyo and Kyoto, Okage Yokocho offers a warm, nostalgic journey into Japan’s cultural heart. Whether it’s the food, the tradition, or the beautiful setting, this hidden gem will leave you with unforgettable memories.
Enjoy your journey ^^//~~
