Kinkaku-ji | Golden Pavilion

Kansai

Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture / 金閣寺(京都府京都市)

Hello everyone, this is Ronny ^^/ Today, I have a question for you.

“What do you think is the most elegant colour?” (Red? Yellow? Actually not btw.)

Of course GOLD, isn’t it? Even if the earth were to turn upside down, this fact would remain unshakable. For example, in the Olympics, which are the greatest, biggest, and most famous sports events, the gold-coloured medal is awarded to each winner, neither silver nor bronze. This is probably because gold has long been a symbol of wealth and power.

Unlike many other metals, gold doesn’t corrode or otherwise deteriorate in quality. In addition, gold is rare enough that not everyone can make a gold coin, but there is a sufficient supply to ensure a healthy circulation of coins.

I digress a little: gold is a symbol of greatness for people. And, one of the Japanese historic temples has been made using gold leaf. This temple is Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. It was built in 1397 by a famous shogun called Yoshimitsu Ashikaga.

Why did I visit there?

Needless to say, this temple, Kinkaku-ji, is so famous. Every Japanese student learns about this shogun and temple in Japanese History classes. In fact, there is also a well-known, calm and atmospheric temple called Ginkaku-ji (the Silver Pavilion, but totally not silver anyway), which was built by later shoguns, Yoshimasa Ashikaga, and is often compared to Kinkaku-ji. But, I decided to go to Kinkakuji, as I knew that if I was going to be the first to go, it would be better to be flashy.
