Why did I visit there?
I was here in Arashiyama, Kyoto, to see a former friend. I had of course visited Kyoto once (on my school trip), but that time I visited famous tourist attractions that any Japanese high school student would know, such as Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion), a historic temple coated in gold leaf, and the Phoenix Hall of Byodoin, which is the motif on the Japanese yen coin. In a way, it was only because my friend happened to work in Arashiyama, but now I am glad that I came here from the bottom of my heart.
The three main spots visited in Arashiyama were:
- Togetsu-kyo Bridge
- Tenryu-ji Temple
- Bamboo Grove
Togetsu-kyo Bridge
The first stop after arriving at Hankyu Arashiyama Station is Togetsu-kyo Bridge. This bridge is very traditional and gives visitors the feeling of returning to the ancient capital of Kyoto in time. The famous Japanese anime, Detective Conan, is newer, having been the setting for the film version. The author recommends the view from the second floor of Arashiyama Yoshimura while enjoying soba.
Tenryu-ji Temple
Next, from Togetsu-kyo Bridge, walk northwards, past a street of retail outlets catering mainly to tourists, and you will see a fine temple. This is Tenryu-ji Temple, a typical Japanese Zen temple. Of course, the building is beautifully constructed, but for me, the highlight is the emotional pond and the abundant plants. The serenity of the place will give you a break after a long journey.
Bamboo Grove
As soon as you pass Tenryu-ji Temple, you must see the bamboo grove (Chikurin). This grove is what every Japanese person thinks of when they think of Arashiyama. The green-grown bamboo is spectacular, but the paths are considered particularly beautiful in autumn when they are coloured with autumn leaves.
Also, at Arashiyama Park, up the grove, there are wild monkeys and a stone monument inscribed with a traditional Japanese poem called the Hyakunin Isshu (One Hundred Poems). If you want to get a deeper taste of Arashiyama, this is a place you cannot miss.
