What is Mt. Takao

Mt. Takao (Takao-san) is a popular hiking destination located just about an hour from central Tokyo. Despite its close proximity to the city, it offers lush forests, scenic trails, and a peaceful spiritual atmosphere. The mountain has been a sacred site for over 1,200 years, home to Yakuo-in Temple, where visitors can experience traditional mountain worship and spot statues of tengu, mythical guardian creatures.

With multiple hiking trails, a cable car, and seasonal beauty such as cherry blossoms in spring and colorful leaves in autumn, Mt. Takao is accessible for people of all ages and fitness levels. On clear days, you can even see Mt. Fuji from the summit. It’s a perfect day trip for those looking to escape the city and experience both Japan’s natural beauty and rich cultural heritage.
